Today has been all about comfort food. I had some pears and apples that weren’t going to get eaten so thought it was about time I made my apples and pears crumble
Its a traditional crumble, so named not just because its made with apples and pears but also because one hefty portion, served with custard, after a Sunday roast will send you up the “apples and pears” (Cockney Rhyming Slang for stairs) to bed to sleep it off!!
Ingredients
- 3 pears
- 2 apples
- handful of sultanas
- Juice of one lemon
- 3 tbsp light brown sugar
For the crumble topping
- 200g plain flour
- 120g butter
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 4 tbsp demerara sugar
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
-
Peal and chop the pears and apples and place in a pan over a low heat with the sultanas and lemon juice. Warm through for 10 minutes.
-
For the crumble topping, in a bowl, rub together the flour and butter with your hands until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the remaining dry ingredients and the demarara sugar. Set aside.
-
Take a small roasting tin. Layer the warm fruit on the bottom, Sprinkle with the golden caster sugar.
-
Top with the crumble mixture and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden-brown.
Serve this beauty with custard or cream if you are being healthier. If you are being truly indulgent then make your own custard but if like me you are short on time some good fresh custard would be perfect.
