I’ve spent the day in Brighton at Student Pride. I know, I know, I’m not a student and was old enough to be many of their parents but I was really interested in a couple of the talks that were booked and ok, Ben Cohen was going to be there and well…..what can I say….
Swoon!!
Anyhow back to the topic of my post, I finished at Pride and was feeling really positive.
As I was leaving a couple of guys were ahead of me, holding hands. I was behind them thinking, ‘ahhh cute!’ when a gaggle (ok 3!) ladies of a certain age walked past and stared at them, then looked at me whilst commenting “OMG, they are holding hands, disgusting”. I actually took a second to recover, having flashbacks to the bad old days of my youth and was almost too shocked to speak. I mean this was Brighton, outside a Pride event in the middle of town and these old “ladies” (in reality probably only a decade older than me) were judging these guys who weren’t snogging, or having full on sex in public, but were holding hands!!
Ok I snapped…my initial feeling was to let it lie but then I remembered what we had just been discussing in the homophobia in sport debate about homophobia not being reported because people didn’t want to make a big deal. But I also didn’t want to ruin the guys day, they hadn’t heard and looked like they were having a great time, so I did what any self respecting gay man would do. I used my god given talents and called….
“Girls, the 80s called and it wants its attitude, and haircuts back!”
Would it change the world?
Would it change their minds even?
Probably not
But I felt FLABULOUS!!!
